It should come as no surprise that hemp for pets is becoming more popular. After all, our cats, dogs, and other pets really are part of our family. They go through many of the same illnesses that people do, things that people treat with hemp. At Canna Relief Consulting Canada Inc. we have been providing safe, legal medical cannabis advice and natural products since 2014. We currently offer hemp for pets in the form of biscuits for dogs and a coconut oil-based tincture that can be given to cats or dogs.
Will Hemp Get Your Dog or Cat “High”?
In a word, no. While hemp and cannabis come from the same plant, hemp does not contain enough delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to make your furry friend high. Instead, hemp contains cannabidiol (CBD), which has shown to contribute to relieving pain and anxiety, and improving your dog or cat’s skin and coat, to name a few.
Hemp Oil Provides Essential Fatty Acids and Can Reduce Your Pets’ Joint Pain
Dana Scott, founder and CEO of Ontario Dogs Naturally Magazine and a breeder of Labrador Retrievers is a strong advocate of giving hemp oil for pets. In her articles Hemp For Dogs: Should You Use It? and CBD Oil For Dogs: 10 Things You Didn’t Know, she outlines numerous health benefits that your dog may experience from hemp oil. In addition to hemp oil being a source of omega-3 (alpha linolenic acid) and omega-6 (linoleic acid) fatty acids, other benefits for your pets may include:
- It may reduce separation anxiety
- It may reduce frequency of epileptic seizures
- It may reduce inflammation
- It may increase appetite
- It may provide arthritis relief
- It may provide weight management
- A source of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)
- Safer and more sustainable than fish oils
Is Hemp Oil Safe for Pets? What Do Canadian Veterinarians Think?
While cannabis has only been legal in Canada for a short time, there remains a lot of research to be done. While the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) currently does not endorse that owners give hemp oil or any cannabis products to their pets, they do recognize the strong anecdotal evidence of the benefits of hemp for pets and across Canada.
In fact, Dr. Troye McPherson, President of the CVMA, recently went one step further. In a letter to the Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Secretariat of Health Canada requesting that veterinarians be legally permitted to dispense hemp medicine for pets:
“The CVMA strongly urges that the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) be amended to allow veterinarians to provide necessary medication to their patients, while maintaining an arms-length oversight on its dispensing.”
