Did you know that there’s a trick to watering cannabis plants in your backyard?
Now that the sun is poking out, maybe you’re interested in growing cannabis outdoors. Keep in mind though, there some tricks to the trade.
Water is important for plant life, especially for providing nutrients! But how much H20 you give your weed depends on their growing conditions. So here’s what you need to know about watering outdoor cannabis plants for the first time:
- Don’t set up a schedule for watering. Instead, look at your plant to see if they need hydration. “In general, you should water your plant if the top of the growing media is dry down to 1/3 inch (13mm) or so,” explain the authors of What’s Wrong With My Marijuana Plant.
- Leafly also advises this: “Stick a finger 1-2 inches into the soil—if it’s wet, hold off; if it’s dry, it’s time to water.” You know your plant will need water if it looks floppy, weak and lifeless, or has brown/yellow leaves.
- Avoid overwatering! This is a common mistake for new growers. Make sure the water is drained by keeping the plant pot suspended over a tray.
- Fun fact: cannabis plants can absorb water better when exposed to cooler or moderate conditions. During warm seasons, you can feed water to your outdoor cannabis plants early morning (prior to the sun being high in the sky), or later during the nighttime.
- Size matters when you’re watering weed. Leafly explains, “To properly water a cannabis plant, it needs to be in the correct size container, or a big enough hole if it’s in the ground. If a pot is too big, the plant’s roots can’t drink water where they don’t reach. If the roots aren’t absorbing water, water will sit in soil and take a long time to evaporate, which can promote root rot and unwanted insects and fungus.”
Take note: In Canada, you’re legally allowed to grow up to FOUR cannabis plants per household (not per person). Also, if you’re concerned about backyard theft, be prepared! Install a fence or alarm system to ward off robberies and larger pests.
