Vitamin D is already known for contributing to healthy immune systems. But did you know that there may be a relationship between vitamin D deficiencies and catching COVID-19?
According to recent research published by JAMA, 489 COVID-19-positive patients were tested this year between March 3-April 10; these individuals were also examined for deficiencies in vitamin D the year before. Nineteen percent of people who lacked vitamin D were officially positive for COVID-19; this is in comparison to 12 percent of patients who were found to have sufficient vitamin D levels.
This is promising news, although the study has concluded that more research needs to be conducted. As summarized by JAMA Network Open: “In this single-center, retrospective cohort study, likely deficient vitamin D status was associated with increased COVID-19 risk, a finding that suggests that randomized trials may be needed to determine whether vitamin D affects COVID-19 risk.” Keep in mind that limitations need to be considered because both vitamin D deficiencies and COVID have been known to relate to obesity, aging and diabetes.
